Lowland
If you’re looking for a dining experience that perfectly captures the "New Charleston" energy—elevated, historic, yet deeply soulful—Lowland is the spot. Located directly across from and associated with The Pinch Hotel, this Michelin-recognized gem has quickly become a cornerstone of the city’s culinary scene.
What makes Lowland so special is the atmosphere. You can enjoy their full menu of modern Southern comfort food throughout the entire building, and each space has a completely different vibe:
The Tavern: Features a stunning copper bar and an original wood-burning fireplace.
The Parlour: An intimate, moody room perfect for a date.
The Upstairs Dining Room: Home to breathtaking hand-painted murals.
The Quinte: A storied 19th-century hangout located just across the alley—more casual and absolutely ideal for large parties or private events.
The Menu Highlights
The food here is Southern comfort that has been meticulously elevated. Here are the "must-orders" from my recent visits:
Lowland Biscuit: Served with farmer cheese and pepper jelly. It’s the perfect start.
Tuna Crudo: Fresh and bright with trout roe, ponzu, and citrus.
Smoked Fish Dip: Served with sourdough toast; it’s a sophisticated take on a coastal classic.
Crispy S.C. Quail: Perfectly fried with buttermilk, sesame, and chervil.
The Main Event: The Tavern Burger
Let’s talk about the Tavern Burger. Forget the smash burger trend; this thing is impressively thick and easily my favorite burger in the South. It comes with fries and a "fancy cognac sauce" that is genuinely addictive.
The Insider Pro-Tip on Temperature: The kitchen typically recommends the burger served medium, but for some reason, they just can’t nail medium. In my experience, when you order it medium, it consistently leans toward medium-plus. If you’re like me and prefer a true medium or medium-rare, order it medium-rare. Every time I've done this, it has come out to an exacting, medium-rare temperature….and I’d rather beef slightly under my temperature preference rather than over.
The Final Verdict
Lowland manages to feel like a hidden neighborhood secret while delivering elevated comfort food. Whether you’re tucked away by the fireplace in the tavern or admiring the murals upstairs, the combination of the atmosphere and that Tavern Burger makes it a non-negotiable stop on any Charleston itinerary.
