Pizza at Emmy Squared

Pizza is a deeply personal thing, right? Everyone has their favorite kind. Me? I normally go for a New York-style pizza. But I recently tried the new Charlotte location of @emmysquaredpizza, with its Detroit-style pan pizza--thick, fluffy crust, with a crisp, essentially fried edge and bottom—and you know what? I could definitely put this style of pie in my regular rotation. And that’s a big deal, coming from me.

Pizza and sides with a Detroit-style twist
Here’s the rundown of what we tried:
Cheesy Garlic Sticks – Crunchy, chewy, cheesy, oh my! Loaded with garlic and basil, served with a slightly sweet tomato sauce. Serious yum.

Waffle Fries – We ordered their Zia-Style fries; a HUGE surprise! I wasn’t initially drawn to these, but everyone told me to try them. Y’all, I’m so happy I did! Crispy waffle fries, topped with a couple sauces and bacon. No joke, it tasted just like a jalapeño popper...but in fry form! I’m a believer!

Le Big Matt - A juicy, savory burger, cooked to a perfect medium and served on a pretzel bun. There’s a very unique flavor in this that I can’t put my finger on, but in a good way. It was very enjoyable!

Chicken Parm Sandwich - This was good, but honestly it was my least favorite thing we tried. The breading was very thick, albeit perfectly crispy, and it had that classic chicken parm flavor. Which is to say, nothing revolutionary, but certainly solid.

Colony^2 Pizza – Listen up: THIS WAS DELICIOUS! Pepperoni, sauce, honey, pickled jalapeños. The honey gave it the lightest sweetness to balance out the mild heat. It was very unique for a pizza and I am HERE for it!

Big Al - This was good, but it was my least favorite pizza we tried. It had the classic flavors of basil, burrata, and Italian sausage, but the Calabrian chili was a bit overwhelming. I would have preferred it with half the heat. Seriously, it’s SPICY.

Vodka with added Basil – I LOVED this pizza. It had a super flavorful, classic vodka sauce on it, and cheese. If you like vodka sauce, don’t miss this one!

Hot Chicken Pizza - A last-minute decision at the waitress’s recommendation. It’s a white pizza with ‘bama white sauce and Nashville hot chicken. It was crispy, crunchy, savory, and a very mild heat to it. I REALLY enjoyed this one.

Zeppole - Made from the same dough as the pizza crust, tossed in cinnamon sugar. Served with a tart cream cheese dip. Can’t fault it.

Banana Pudding – A really nice banana pudding. Creamy vanilla, chunks of fresh banana, and crushed vanilla wafers. Yum.

Solid food, a new favorite

Like I said: I tend to go for New York-style when I want pizza. But Emmy Squared did a delicious job, and I can’t recommend it enough. There may have been one or two missteps with the heat and texture, but this place is worth checking out.
