Sorry Charlie's

Beausoleil Oysters at Sorry Charlie’s in Savannah

Y’all! I admit it: I’m kind of in love with Savannah! It’s very similar to Charleston, except—frankly--I like it more. It’s highly walkable, and a bit more picturesque with the trees. A perfect city to wander and get lost in, and especially ideal when you inevitably get hungry and need something delicious to fuel your next adventure!

When in doubt, follow the locals
While in Savannah, I came across an oyster bar filled with locals (a VERY good sign!), called @sorrycharlies. High level: it’s a no-frills restaurant, with super fresh seafood and excellent, friendly service.

Here’s what we tried:

Roasted Oyster Sampler comprised of the following:

Butter, Garlic and Parm - Holy wow, these were SO GOOD! The perfect butter-garlic combo: enough to keep it rich, but not overwhelming.
Casino - Also excellent! The red pepper gave it a nice subtle flavor with some welcome sweetness, too. It was nicely complemented by the bacon fat and sharpness of aged Parm.
Rockefeller - This was my personal favorite: fatty and rich, creamy in texture, phenomenal flavor. Recommended!

Beausoleil Oysters - I LOVE that they have these! So fresh. The vinegar mignonette was nice and smooth rather than sharp. The only downside was that I had to separate a few from the shell myself. Not ideal, but not a deal-breaker either.

Hush Puppies – AWESOME! So tender and fluffy. Phenomenal crunch on the outside without drying out the interior. Honestly? One of the best hushpuppies I’ve ever had. Seriously. The honey butter is very good, but I have to recommend an upgrade: the pimento cheese has INCREDIBLE flavor and texture! Totally worth it.

Fried Green Tomato Stack - Great flavor! A little Sriracha, tender tomato, perfect crunch. Make sure you spread the crab, though; it adds a phenomenal dimension. SOOOO tasty!

Savannah Blue Crab Cakes - This was okay. Decent. Lots of crab, for sure, but could use a little more texture. A bit of chew, maybe some crunch? It just had a very smooth, almost pureed mouthfeel. Incomplete.

Burger with Fries - Great fries: lightly seasoned, soft interior, crispy exterior. The pickle was your standard pickle, no surprises there. The burger looked pretty unassuming, like a premade patty, but it was juicy and cooked exactly how I asked. A pleasant surprise! Nice spicy mustard on it, too. Not my favorite thing on the menu, but still a solid burger for any pickier eaters out there.

Low Country Boil - Loved that they could forgo the clams and add more shrimp. Everything was properly cooked, especially based on texture. This was okay overall, for sure, but I think it was a bit under-seasoned. Could have benefitted from much more Old Bay. But then again, pretty much everything can benefit from more Old Bay, am I right?

Hidden Savannah gem

From its fresh flavors, fantastic service, and no-frills vibe to its clear affection with the locals, Sorry Charlie’s is a sweet little gem in a sweet city. For what it is - I’d give it a good 9/10, and my sincerest recommendation.
