Millers All Day

Waffles

We ended up leaving for Charleston super early in the morning. We’re all foodies, so we wanted to squeeze in an extra meal if possible. So, we arrived around 9 am on a Friday morning and started searching around to find what restaurants were open that had indoor dining available. With COVID-19, many places in Charleston were only offering outdoor dining or to-go orders.

A menu with something for everyone

One of the places we kept hearing about was Millers All Day. It’s set up like an old pharmacy that serves the same menu all day long. The vibe is super cool. Want lunch at 10 am? You can get it. Want breakfast at 2 pm? No Problem. The menu looked pretty good, so we decided to check it out. We tried not to go overboard, but of course we did, as we always do. Here’s what we tried:

Waffles. bananas, sorghum, caramel, meringue. Fluffy and delicious. They were essentially bananas foster waffles, but not as sweet. Which I liked that. I definitely recommend them.

Pancakes. cornmeal pancakes, Falling Bark Farms hickory syrup. YUUUUUMMY. These, like the waffles, were fluffy breakfast pillows. They had a great flavor — you could taste the corn — and they weren’t dry as many cornmeal pancakes can be. The texture was great as well — not at all gritty like some cornmeal treats can be. Oh, and you can order them as a single pancake, or a stack of two or three.

Fried Chicken Biscuit. sorghum mustard, pickles. A solid fried chicken sandwich. It had a super crispy coating and tender chicken inside. The biscuit was great as well — it wasn’t one of those dried-out biscuits that suck all the moisture out of your mouth.

Pimento Biscuit. smoked gouda, scallion, bacon. The biscuit was OK. I found it to be salty and a bit overwhelming in terms of the flavor. While super popular, I think there are better things on the menu.

B.E.C. bacon, herb mayo, white cheddar, scrambled eggs, brioche bun. I was expecting great things from this breakfast sandwich, but it was a bit of a dud. It was cheesy, which I always love. But I didn’t love the smokiness of the bacon, and the brioche bun was SUPER dried out. It really wasn’t anything special — most people can make a better one a home.

Home Fries. Super crispy, fried potatoes. These were DELICIOUS! I highly recommend everyone at the table order their own side, or you will be fighting over these. They’re addictively good.

Brioche Donuts. The choices were pumpkin spice or Nutella. Of course, we ordered both. I have to say, they weren’t what I was expecting. The brioche was super dense —not the pillowy brioche I’m used to in a donut. The pumpkin spice tasted like pumpkin pie. It was better than the Nutella, which I didn’t like. I was expecting gooey, rich, sticky Nutella inside this donut. Instead, it was filled with what tasted like a mixture of Nutella and sour cream (but heavier on the sour cream). Instead of being sweet and decadent, it was tart, almost sour, and very runny for filling.

My final verdict?

All in, I’d give Millers All Day 7/10. What’s good is very good, but there were certainly some let downs. It’s a solid spot in Charleston for breakfast, but I also think there are some better places — you just have to hunt them down.
