A Culinary Hug in Doraville: Kamayan Filipino City

If you’re hunting for some of the best Filipino food in the Atlanta area, you need to head straight to Kamayan in Doraville. Located right on Buford Highway, this spot is a masterclass in traditional, classic Filipino cooking. It isn’t trying to reinvent the wheel—it’s just doing the classics exceptionally well, served with a side of genuine warmth.

The Savory Staples

The menu is a deep dive into savory, rich, and perfectly executed comfort food. Here is the breakdown of the must-orders:

  • Pork Lumpia: This is a non-negotiable starter. These fried spring rolls are packed with seasoned pork and veggies—perfectly crispy on the outside and savory on the inside.

  • Lechon Kawali: This deep-fried braised pork belly is the gold standard. It’s rich and fatty, but with plenty of tender meat and that signature crunch. Served with Mang Tomas or spicy vinegar, it’s a total knockout.

  • Pancit (Bihon/Canton or Sotanghon): I’ve had both versions, and they are everything a classic noodle dish should be. The mix of roasted chicken, Chinese sausage, and pork belly with fresh veggies is balanced and satisfying.

  • Camaron de Zamboanga (The Star): This is easily my favorite dish on the menu. The prawns are cooked in an incredible coconut curry sauce with crab fat and topped with chilis. The flavor is immense—I find myself putting that sauce on everything. I'll dip my lumpia in it, drizzle it over rice, and even the pork belly. I’d honestly drink it if I could.

Note on the Skewers: While most of the menu hits high marks, the BBQ skewers were the only thing that has ever been a miss for me. They can easily be overcooked, so I’d recommend sticking to one of the other 30+ choices instead.

Sweet Finishes & Fresh Sips

Kamayan doesn’t serve alcohol, and honestly, you won’t miss it. Their fresh juices—Calamansi, Cantaloupe, Mango, Pineapple, and Hibiscus—provide a bright acidity and natural sweetness that cuts through the richness of the pork and coconut sauces perfectly.

As for dessert, I’ve tried the entire list. They are all solid, but the Ube Flan Cake (purple yam crème caramel) and the Ube Crème Brûlée (with a hidden layer of ube jam at the bottom) are the standouts for me.

The Service: Hospitality Done Right

This is where Kamayan truly shines. Every visit feels like a hug. The staff is attentive, the food comes out fast, and the owners are frequently seen walking the floor and chatting with guests.

There’s a beautiful tradition here: if it’s your first time visiting, the owners will often send over a complimentary dessert to welcome you. It’s a small gesture that speaks volumes about the pride and hospitality they pour into this space. You’ll leave feeling full, but more importantly, you’ll leave feeling seen.

The Verdict

Kamayan is a phenomenal representation of Filipino culture and cuisine. It’s traditional, approachable, and high-energy. Whether you are a regular on Buford Highway or a first-timer to Filipino flavors, this place is a must-visit - and definitely worth a detour from downtown Atlanta.
