Bull and Bread
Bull & Bread Turned a Food Hall Counter Into One of Columbia's Best Sandwiches
Gather food hall has ten different counters to choose from, but Bull & Bread is the one to know. They're making some of the best sandwiches in Columbia, SC.
It is the sister concept to The Half, the sandwich shop in Wilmington, NC that has become the most talked-about lunch counter on the coast, and if you've eaten there, you already know the ethos: quality ingredients, and a seasonality-first approach to produce — tomatoes especially, worked in when they're actually good rather than served as filler year-round. But rather than copy The Half's menu, the Columbia team brought over some of the most popular combinations, while adding some signatures of their own.
The board covers real ground: meat-forward builds for the carnivores, vegan and vegetarian options for those with dietary restrictions, and a build-your-own option for anyone who'd rather start from scratch. The signature builds, though, are where Bull & Bread makes its case.
The Proof is in the Hoagie Sauce
Two sandwiches do the heaviest lifting here. The Christine stacks ham, Genoa salami, fresh mozzarella, roasted red peppers, lettuce, and a hit of red wine vinegar on a roll, but what pulls it together is the shop's own hoagie sauce — a mustard-based condiment with just enough tang to register without taking over. Warm, creamy, and distinctly Italian, it's comforting without ever tipping into heavy.
The Columbian is the cold counterpart, and just as strong: ham, Genoa salami, mortadella, fresh mozzarella, roasted red peppers, and Italian hots, finished with a balsamic drizzle on a toasted roll. Ask for their house-made hot sauce on the side. The meats stay remarkably tender, the roll holds its toast without turning tough, and the sweet balsamic keeps the fiery hot sauce from ever fully taking over, each bite landing a little differently than the last.
The full board runs about fifteen sandwiches deep, priced mostly between $8 and $15, plenty to justify a few return trips. Two more have my attention for the next one: the Dez, made with seasoned chicken, thick-cut bacon, white cheddar, and house ranch on a toasted Italian roll; and the Warren, a spicier build with seasoned chicken, house-made buffalo sauce, ranch, shredded lettuce, onions, and pickles on a toasted ciabatta.
The house chips deserve to have a reputation of their own too. Fried to a heavy crisp snap and dusted with a proprietary spice blend that lands somewhere close to a high-end Old Bay, they'd make a case for themselves even without a sandwich attached. Grab a bag to round out your meal, and maybe a second on your way out for a snack later. They're incredibly addictive.
Built to be Versatile
Housed inside Gather, Bull & Bread benefits from one of the more versatile and inviting atmospheres in Columbia. The space is open-air, built around sprawling communal tables, and kid-friendly enough to include its own dedicated play area — an easy sell for anyone eating with young kids in tow. It works just as well for a quick weekday lunch on your own as it does for settling in with a beer and letting the afternoon go. And if a sandwich isn't what you're after, the other nine counters in the hall are there to fill in.
Final Verdict
Bull & Bread raises the bar for what a sandwich counter in Columbia can be. The Christine and the Columbian alone are worth the trip, built with the same discipline that made The Half a fixture on the Wilmington coast, and the rest of the board backs them up. Gather gives it a versatile, easygoing space to work from, with plenty of other counters if a sandwich isn't your goal that day, but for me, the sandwiches are the reason to go. And don’t skip the chips. Then decide for yourself if it’s one of the best sandwiches in Columbia.
