Boutique Charm with a Massive Heart: Why The Lantern Hotel is My Favorite Stay in Columbia
It takes a lot for a hotel to really stand out to me these days. Most boutique spots nail the aesthetics—cool light fixtures, nice linens, a trendy restaurant in the lobby—but they usually lack a soul. That is exactly why The Lantern Hotel in Columbia, South Carolina left a mark. Without question, it is my favorite hotel in the city, and they’re doing something so incredibly unique that it makes every other standard hotel stay feel lacking.
Tucked right in the heart of The Vista, this 59-room boutique hotel isn’t just a place to crash; it’s a hospitality property built entirely around a mission. Through a first-of-its-kind partnership with the University of South Carolina’s CarolinaLIFE and College of Hospitality programs, The Lantern provides hands-on training and meaningful employment to students and individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
About 30 to 40 percent of the hotel’s entire staff is made up of these incredible individuals. When you check in, you see firsthand how genuine inclusion completely transforms the service. It’s emotional, it’s inspiring, and it’s executed at an incredibly high level. The staff is proud of the work they are doing, and their confidence is infectious. You aren't just paying for a room; your stay is directly funding independence and career development for people who deserve the opportunity to thrive.
The Firehouse Restorations & Thoughtful Touches
The property itself is lovely. The hotel occupies a meticulously restored building that used to serve as the old Columbia Fire Department headquarters. They completely gutted it down to the studs to turn it into a hotel, but they went out of their way to preserve the building’s history. The hotel's design team connected the main Central Fire Station building (where the lobby and Ladder 13 sit), the original six-story drill tower (where the cool multi-story suites are), and an existing garage building—plus a new addition to hook them all together for the gym.
The design is heavily Mid-Century Modern but deeply rooted in local Columbia character, spanning across the three historic buildings. And no detail was overlooked. The design team went crazy with small touches throughout the property. My favorite? They actually took replicas of the original firefighters' uniforms and used the "FD" stamped buttons to accent the backs of the barstools.
And can we talk about THE SMELL? The moment you step through the doors, you are hit with their signature hotel scent, and I am completely obsessed with it. It sets the tone for the whole vibe: clean, premium, and instantly relaxing.
The Rooms & The Ultimate Game-Day Suite
The rooms are beautifully quiet, spotlessly clean, and exceptionally comfortable. Every room is loaded with premium touches, including smart TVs, mini-fridges, individual climate control, and—best of all—plush Boll & Branch luxury linens on the beds.
The hotel offers everything from standard and premium king and queen configurations to massive accessible deluxe spaces featuring walk-in and roll-in showers. But if you want to stay in one of their most unique rooms, check out the specialized suites and tower rooms:
The Premium King Tower: Features staggering 20-foot ceilings, an artsy chandelier, and a built-in sound machine.
The Terrace Suite: Comes with an expansive, furnished, sunset-facing private outdoor terrace, a separate living room, and a wet bar.
The Tower Suite (The Four-Story Townhome): This room is absolute madness. It is a four-story suite built inside the original historic Fire Tower, connected by an internal staircase. You enter on the 3rd floor into a massive living room with a full-size fridge and wet bar. The 4th and 5th floors each house private queen bedrooms and baths. Finally, the 6th floor features sweeping, majestic views of the State Capitol and downtown Columbia, packed with another wet bar, a poker and game table, board games, and a 75-inch TV hooked up to a PlayStation. It is the ultimate blueprint for a Game Day weekend or a wedding party.
Dining & Amenities
The amenities don't take a back seat to the rooms, either. If you like to keep up with your workouts while traveling, their glass-enclosed fitness center is perfect. It is completely flooded with natural light, stocked with all the equipment you actually need, and offers plenty of room for multiple people to move around without ever feeling cramped or on top of each other. Plus, the location in the center of The Vista means you are within easy walking distance of the area's best restaurants, bars, the Statehouse, and the USC campus.
When you get hungry, you don't even have to leave the building. The on-site restaurant, Ladder 13, is run by Executive Chef Joseph Wolfson under the creative direction of James Beard-nominated Chef Kevin Johnson. Located right inside the historic fire station’s original engine bay, the restaurant reimagines Mediterranean cuisine but punches it up with a bold, produce-forward Lowcountry spirit. You can sit beneath the glow of the original fire doors, sip a cocktail, and eat incredibly well-composed small plates that celebrate the flavors of the South.
