The Candler Hotel
Historic Elegance Meets Modern Luxury: The Candler Hotel Atlanta
If you are looking for a stay that perfectly balances Atlanta’s rich history with high-end modern comfort, The Candler Hotel is arguably the best property in the city. Originally built by Coca-Cola co-founder Asa Griggs Candler in 1906, this downtown landmark has been meticulously transformed by Hilton into a soulful, luxurious retreat.
The Experience: Historic Charm & Modern Comfort
The first thing you notice is the craftsmanship—the intricate marble, the ornate woodwork, and the grand staircase. But once you step into the rooms, it’s all about relaxation.
The Suite Life: I stayed in a one-bedroom suite, and it was incredibly spacious. It’s the kind of room you actually want to spend time in rather than just using it as a place to sleep. I loved my slow mornings there - a nice shower, coffee in one of the most comfortable robes I’ve ever worn (to the point I tracked down the manufacturer and bought the same one for home), caught up on the news, and sent off a few emails.
The Details: They sound inconsequential, but the little details matter. The quality of the robe really sticks out in my mind, but there were so many other small touches. There was mouthwash and a dental kit in the bathroom, as well as bath salts for the soaker tub.
The Price Point: Given the level of service and the historic beauty of the property, the value is shocking. I’ve seen suites here as low as $250/night, which is an absolute steal for this quality of experience, in a major city nonetheless.
The Location & History
The Candler is positioned perfectly for exploring downtown Atlanta, but the building itself holds a secret. In the basement, you can find the original vault where the Coca-Cola recipe was once stored. It’s a cool nod to the city’s most famous export.
And because the hotel is a Georgia Aquarium partner, they offer "stay-and-play" packages, which include passes to the aquarium right with your stay! It makes the logistics of visiting one of the city’s top attractions even more seamless.
The Aquarium Tip
I took full advantage f the hotel’s partnership, and went to the Georgia Aquarium right at opening. That’s the best time to go because it feels far more intimate without the crowds. You can see all the exhibits without feeling like you are in the way or getting shuffled around in the crowds. You can stay at each as long as you’d like — which I could spend HOURS in front of the Ocean Voyager tank with the whale shark, sea turtle and rays. Also there’s a chance the sea otters might still be asleep if you go in the morning and it’s quite possibly the cutest thing I’ve ever seen.
Behind the Scenes: I highly recommend booking the behind-the-scenes tour. I was able to watch the whale sharks being fed, which is a bucket-list experience you just can’t get from the main gallery.
The Verdict
The Candler Hotel isn't just a place to stay; it’s a piece of Atlanta history. Whether you’re a local looking for a luxurious staycation or a visitor wanting to be near the Aquarium and World of Coca-Cola, the combination of historical "wow" factor and incredible value makes this my top pick for the city.
