30 Essential Restaurants, Bars, and Coffee Shops in Greenville, SC

Map

Walking through downtown Greenville, SC feels a bit like stepping onto the set of a Hallmark movie—it’s that quintessential "perfect town" where the main character returns home and unexpectedly falls in love. But unlike the movies, while the city is very charming, it is far from sleepy. Greenville is packed with an incredible density of places to eat and drink, including a Michelin-starred French restaurant that actually lives up to its reputation. But some gems are well hidden; I never would have found several of them without the help of friends who know these streets better than I do—especially Stephanie Burnette, who is one of the few people I trust implicitly for food recommendations. And while there are so many incredible places in the area, these 30 restaurants, coffee shops, and bars are the ones I find to be essential — showcasing the best of what Greenville has to offer.

Scoundrel

Scoundrel is the kind of restaurant that justifies a three-hour round trip drive just for a single meal. Chef Joe Cash has created a Michelin-starred masterpiece where classic French cuisine is elevated through precision and technique. The menu descriptions appear straightforward, the execution is a study in layered flavors and perfectly balanced textures. If you’re with a group, the Tomahawk Ribeye—served with golden duck fat fries and broccoli rabe in a decadent cheese sauce—is among the best I’ve had anywhere, including France. However, the seasonal Duck is the true star, featuring flawlessly rendered fat and skin as crispy as a Peking duck, yet it remains classically French. The starters are equally impressive, from the delicate Deviled Blue Crab to the table side steak tartare to a bread service elevated by unique seasonal butters. While the Crème Brûlée is a classic finish, it was suggested to dip the leftover duck fat fries into the custard for a salty-sweet revelation—like fries and ice cream with a trust fund—and now I’m officially addicted to.

Local Honey Coffee Company

Local Honey Coffee Co is the quintessential Greenville coffee shop, perfectly positioned overlooking the Reedy River right off the Swamp Rabbit Trail. The space is a dream for natural light, with floor-to-ceiling windows and a modern, minimalist vibe that balances industrial concrete with the warmth of lush plants and wood. While the hospitality is as inviting as the decor, the expertly crafted specialty beverages are the true draw; every drink is beautifully served on a bamboo tray with a side of water and a small vase of flowers. Their menu ranges from a classic, high-quality espresso bar and ceremonial matcha to inventive creations like the Iced Coconut Pineapple Cloud and the Butterfly Cloud with lychee puree. If you’re hungry, their small bites are just as intentional, featuring seasonal toasts and phenomenal hotcakes (only available on weekdays) served with whipped butter and maple syrup.

Jianna

Jianna is a modern Italian osteria that captures the energetic heart of downtown Greenville, anchored by a massive 40-foot signature bar and a terrace that offers the best views of Main Street and Falls Park. Chef Michael Kramer draws inspiration from classic Italian traditions but adds an innovative edge to a menu centered on oysters, house-made pastas, and seasonal seafood. The daily-extruded noodles are the main event—ranging from a classic Spaghetti TBG with roasted tomatoes to the rich Rigatoni with Lamb Shank Ragu—though you should always start with the Ricotta Crostini drizzled in truffle honey. The wine program is intentionally approachable and deeply Italian, with many bottles thoughtfully priced around $50, making it an ideal spot to linger over a glass of Prosecco and a plate of charred octopus. Whether you’re sitting at the lively 360-degree bar or enjoying the breeze on the balcony, it’s a quintessential Greenville experience that balances sophistication with an unpretentious, welcoming soul.

Little Secret

Little Secret is the undisputed "cool kid" of the Greenville scene, bringing a casual, unapologetic, and highly creative energy to the city. Housed in a vibrant mint-green building with a small patio and counter-service ordering, the vibe is intentionally laid-back—think vintage-style plates and stemless glassware that feel like a backyard hang. Founded by Chef Conner Hinderks—formerly the CDC of New Orleans’ acclaimed Maypop—and talented beverage director Christina Blackley, the concept evolved from a cult-favorite pop-up into a permanent destination for Asian-leaning Southern comfort food. The seasonal menu shifts every few weeks, featuring standout mashups like the Szechuan Steak au Poivre served with coconut rice and Tamarind Sticky Ribs tossed in a Vietnamese-inspired nuoc cham. For those who appreciate a technical pour, Blackley’s Martini is a spectacular masterpiece perfected over years of refinement. Whether you’re diving into Mushroom and Manchego Dumplings or the Fire Cracker Shrimp with lemon pepper aioli, every visit offers a bold, chef-driven experience that feels a bit irreverant and entirely unpretentious.

Swamp Rabbit Café & Grocery

Swamp Rabbit Cafe & Grocery is the ultimate community hub, born from a mission to make local farm goods accessible every day of the week rather than just during Saturday markets. Located in a converted meat-processing facility directly on the Swamp Rabbit Trail, this one-part specialty grocer and one-part cafe has grown into a bustling farm store that supports over 300 local producers. While the market is a treasure trove of fresh produce and local honey, the cafe is legendary for its sandwiches served on house-made Stecca bread—a salty, crusty, and delightfully chewy loaf that is a Greenville staple. You can’t go wrong with the classic Turkey Pesto Sandwich, but the seasonal rotations, like the Strawberry Fields Chicken Salad Sandwich or the cleverly named "Herb Your Enthusiasm" French dip, are equally impressive. Whether you’re grabbing a loaf of Stecca and a chocolate chip cookie to go, or joining the families and cyclists at the outdoor picnic tables, Swamp Rabbit Cafe & Grocery offers a vibrant, soul-warming slice of the Upstate's sustainable food system.

Hone

Hone is the creative heartbeat of the Greenville food scene, serving as a restaurant incubator and nonprofit initiative in partnership with Mill Village Ministries. Designed as a launchpad for aspiring entrepreneurs, it offers a rotating residency where the city’s most exciting up-and-coming concepts test their ideas before moving into permanent brick-and-mortar homes. Current and past residents represent a wildly diverse culinary spectrum, from the California-inspired breakfast burritos of Daylight Burrito—famed for their San Diego roots and "electric efficiency"—to the elevated Filipino-influenced pop-up Lolaceli, which focuses on foraging and homemade charcoal. You might find a technical pour-over at Sacrament coffee, or an ingredient-driven coursed dinner from Lucy Anne’s featuring clever riffs like a collard green Caesar salad. Because the lineup is constantly evolving, every visit to Hone offers a first look at the future of Greenville’s dining landscape.

Augusta Street Market

Augusta Street Market is where New York deli culture meets Southern charm, creating a neighborhood staple that handles a deli counter, bakery, and curated gourmet market with consistent excellence. Everything here is scratch-made, from the fresh-baked bread and bagels to the small-batch soups. While the menu is extensive, it’s anchored by heavy hitters like the Bleecker (a top-tier Italian sub) and the McDaniel (an incredible take on a black bean burger), but the real star is the off-menu Havemeyer. This crispy chicken cutlet Caesar sandwich is quite literally the best riff on the concept I’ve ever eaten, though you can’t go wrong with their classic caesar wrap called The Byrd or The Grove, featuring shaved chicken pesto and crisp parmesan. Beyond the sandwiches, the market offers a custom Methodical Coffee espresso blend and a bakery section with delicious treats—just be sure to arrive early, because once they sell out of bread for the day, they’re out.

Nine of Cups

Named after the tarot card for contentment, Nine of Cups pairs a thoughtfully curated menu with exceptional in-house baking. While their laminated butter croissants and traditional buttermilk biscuits with jam are classic, it’s the bakery's highly innovative creations that steal the show. "The Outsider"—a hand-braided croissant layered with a honey gochujang glaze, furikake, and savory Korean cheesy corn—is an absolute triumph of sweet, savory, and umami flavors with just a hint of heat, while the hand-braided apricot and cardamom knot offers a perfectly spiced, sugar-peared alternative. Even the classic chocolate chip cookie is elevated here, utilizing brown butter for a deep, caramelized nuttiness that guarantees crisp edges and a perfectly chewy center. The beverage program is equally excellent. Beyond expertly poured cortados and cappuccinos, the specialty drink menu shines with creations like the "Hermit’s Cup"—a cozy latte infused with orange and five-spice syrup—and the "Castaway"—a refreshing, lightly sweet iced matcha latte cut with coconut milk and ginger beer. Between the hospitality and delicious goods, Nine of Cups is the kind of spot you'll want to work into your weekly routine.

Asia Pacific

Asia Pacific Restaurant & Market is a hidden gem tucked inside an unassuming Asian grocery store, serving some of the most authentic Chinese cuisine you'll find between Raleigh and Atlanta. While the atmosphere is simple and no-frills, the restaurant is impeccably clean, and the hospitality is exceptional, with a team that takes immense pride in their craft. The menu is massive, boasting over 100 items that range from expertly executed Americanized classics like General Tso’s Chicken to deeply traditional specialties. You’ll find familiar favorites like Soup Dumplings, Beef Chow Fun, Hong Kong-style Roast Duck, and a huge variety of Noodle Soups, alongside less recognized authentic dishes such as Steamed Pompano with Pickled Red Pepper, Ma La Chicken Ding, and Spicy Fish Hot Pot. Whether you're stopping in for a comforting bowl of wonton soup or a full multi-course feast, the quality and depth of flavor make this an essential stop for anyone who loves Asian cuisine.

The Jones Oyster Co

The Jones Oyster Co. is a small, casual oyster bar that proves you don’t need an oceanfront view to find high-quality seafood. It’s the kind of place where the design is tight and the sourcing is even tighter—specializing in coastal classics like lobster rolls and a seriously good New England clam chowder. While the raw oysters are exceptionally fresh and expertly shucked, don’t sleep on the "cooked" side of the menu; the Smoked Fish Dip and decadent Crab Fried Rice are absolute standouts. Whether you’re stopping in for a bright, breezy lunch or a sophisticated evening centered around the raw bar, the experience is always well-executed. Just keep in mind they don't take reservations, so plan to arrive early to snag a seat at the bar and watch the shuckers in action.

Demarco’s Italian

DeMarco’s Italian is a cozy, dependable favorite located right next to Fluor Field in downtown Greenville, where the scent of the wood-fired oven hits you the moment you walk in. The menu is intentionally focused, featuring a tight selection of house-made pastas and hand-tossed pizzas, but the absolute showstopper is the Veal Chop "Vodka" Parmigiana for Two. It’s a massive, indulgent dish smothered in spicy vodka sauce, house-made mozzarella, and chives that is worth the trip alone. You’ll also find classic starters executed with high-quality ingredients—think Wagyu meatballs, fresh calamari, and a variety of crisp salads. Whether you're heading in for a pre-game dinner or a romantic evening on the outdoor patio, DeMarco’s balances that "neighborhood staple" feel with a sophisticated, wood-fired edge.

Windy City Burgers

Windy City Burgers is a standout in the Greenville scene because they take the "scratch-made" philosophy seriously, baking their own buns fresh every morning and grinding over 100 pounds of meat daily for their signature half-pound patties. Their menu features about ten distinct builds, ranging from a classic cheeseburger to inventive combinations like the Pullman Popper, which hits every flavor note with bacon, cheddar, fig jam, jalapeño cream cheese, and the satisfying crunch of potato chips. The Hudson Burger is another massive, must-order favorite, loaded with bacon, onion straws, and BBQ sauce. Because their signature patties are a blend of beef and pork, those looking for an alternative should absolutely swap in the fried chicken—it is remarkably crispy while remaining incredibly juicy. Paired with their perfectly seasoned fries, it’s easily one of the most satisfying casual meals in the city.

The real magic happens on Fridays and Saturdays when Aryana transitions to a full-service menu. This is when you can dive into their masterfully spiced kebabs—lamb, chicken, or kofta—tender lamb shank, daal, and warm, house-made Afghan naan, among other dishes. You’ll find traditional staples like the Classic Italian packed with hot capicola, a house-made Chicken Salad with aged provolone, and a comforting Meatball Parmesan, alongside Philly favorites like Italian Roast Pork and a "properly pounded" Chicken Cutlet sandwich. Keipi

Keipi is a nonprofit restaurant in Hampton Station that feels more like an invite into a Georgian home. All their profits go toward the First Things Foundation, but the heart of the place is really about "otherworldly hospitality" and ancient traditions. You’ve got to try the Adjaruli Khachapuri—a cheese-filled bread boat topped with an egg yolk that you swirl together—and their Khinkali soup dumplings. While the food and traditional wine are worth a visit any day, the Friday night dinners are such a unique experience. You can also opt for the Barman’s Choice to have a custom drink crafted specifically for your palate. Saigon Fast Food

Saigon Fast Food is a quintessential "hole-in-the-wall" that has been serving authentic Vietnamese soul food in Greenville for over 25 years. This family-owned gem skips the flashy decor in favor of honest, nostalgic flavors that feels like a trip overseas. The menu centers on traditional staples like the Combination Pho—boasting a rich, life-giving broth and tender cuts of steak, shank, tripe, and tendon—and classic Pork Bánh Mì. While the menu does include other Asian favorites, like Pad Thai and Fried Rice, the true draw is the classic Vietnamese dishes and cozy, home-cooked atmosphere. Expect a cultural experience that prioritizes the plate over the pageantry; it’s very casual, and you might need to wave someone down to order or pay, but that’s just part of the authentic experience. Also don’t leave without a Cà Phê Sũa Dá (Vietnamese iced coffee). But for anyone seeking generous portions, reasonable prices, and a genuine taste of Vietnam, this is worth a visit.

Bar Margaret

Bar Margaret is a neighborhood hangout in West Greenville, where a whimsical, industrial-chic interior—complete with concrete, brick, and quirky, pastel wallpaper—sets the stage for a great time. Their menu is as playful as the decor, featuring "Lil Piggies" (pigs in a blanket) and an entire section dedicated to fries, ranging from Truffled Up with shaved pecorino to the Loaded fries topped with "pimp" cheese sauce and a sunny-side-up egg. The stars of the show are the fully customizable burgers, including a clever house-made veggie burger bound with Pita House falafel batter. And follow it with a stack of sea-salt-sprinkled chocolate chip cookies for dessert. True to their slogan—“We don’t expect to be the only place you drink. We just want to be the place you think about when you’re drinking at other places”—the bar crafts standout cocktails like the spicy Pigeon Picante with jalapeño-infused tequila and pomelo Jarritos, or the Flora 75, a lavender-infused twist on the classic French 75.

The Anchorage

The Anchorage is a cornerstone of the Village of West Greenville, founded by Chef Greg McPhee, formerly of Husk. Recognized as a James Beard Semi-Finalist for Best New Restaurant in 2018, this neighborhood gem is celebrated for its commitment to local producers and a menu that is intentionally tight, often featuring only eight to ten hyper-seasonal dishes at a time, as well as a few desserts. Guests can explore sophisticated plates like Yellowfin Tuna Crudo with smoked salmon roe, Smoked Beetroot Tartare on caraway toast, or Piselli Verdi Pasta with a green pea emulsion—or opt for the "Tasting Table," a four-course portioned experience for the whole group. While the front of the restaurant doubles as a curated wine shop, the cocktail program is equally impressive, featuring inventive drinks like the Buzz Me, Babe with gin and Chartreuse or the espresso-forward Up In Flames. Whether you’re indulging in a seasonal tasting menu or enjoying a drink on the rooftop terrace, the experience is always delightful.

Society Sandwich Bar

Occupying a two-story space on Coffee Street that housed a legendary steakhouse for over 90 years, Society Sandwich Bar & Social Club brings a rebellious, high-energy spirit to downtown Greenville. Owners Jeremy Krauze and Chef Chris Rosensteel have crafted a "no rules" menu that stays open until 2 a.m., perfectly filling the city’s late-night void. While the kitchen has rolled over 14,000 of their fan-favorite Philly cheese egg rolls, the real draw is the inventive fusion of sandwiches and ramen. You’ll find everything from the "Post Balone" hangover sandwich to the "Voodoo" ramen, a creative mashup of miso broth, blackened shrimp, and crispy okra. With two dedicated bars housing an impressive library of bourbon and tequila, it’s a vibrant spot where the cocktails are as bold as the flavors coming out of the kitchen.

Greenville Beer Exchange

This one is a bonus. Greenville Beer Exchange has a small tap room tucked in the back, but the real draw is the retail store that offers a wonderful selection of champagne. It is a collection of grower champagnes and small-production bottles, that constantly overdelivers on value, expertly curated by Amy Yancey—the "Queen of Bubbles." Her knowledge of wine is staggering, and I make it a point to stop by whenever I’m in town to see what she has sourced — gems like the Meunier Perpetual Extra Brut from Famille Delouvin or a Blanc de Noirs from Robert Barbichon. Amy is even helping me hunt down a specific favorite from my time in Paris, which I haven’t been able to find anywhere else in the USA. If you can't browse the shelves in person though, Amy offers a grower champagne club through her company, PocketSomm, that ships a curated selection of her finds to most states.
