Bossy Beulah's

The Beaut

Fries

If you’ve read my post on Noble Smoke, you know I don’t support Jim Noble and his restaurants, and why. With that said, he opened a new restaurant next to Noble Smoke in Charlotte called Bossy Beulah’s. It’s a fried chicken restaurant that everyone has been raving about, including my friends.

Given the reviews, it’s been difficult for me to hold out on trying it. I was successful… until this past weekend. A friend was in town visiting, and she wanted to go. Normally, I could resist; however, we were about two blocks away, and she got me to cave in and try it.

A casual lunch spot
To start — this is a casual fried chicken spot. The atmosphere is cute, but nothing fancy. Think of it like a garage painted and converted to a restaurant. There’s no 5-star vibe here. It’s more like a local chicken shack. And I’m OK with that.

Nothing fancy, just 7 items on the menu

I was surprised when ordering to find how limited the menu is. Like — 7 items limited:

The Beaut. Joyce Farms fried chicken breast, pickles, Duke's mayo.

The Beaut with Cheese. Same as The Beaut… but add American cheese.

Bossy Bites. Hand-cut, hand-breaded bites made from Joyce Farms chicken breast.

Simple Salad. A basic salad.

Iredell Slaw. Slaw with mayo and poppyseed dressing.

Fries. Crispy and salty.

Hand Pie. Mini hand pie with rotating filling (cherry, berry, etc.).

An average chicken sammy

The fried chicken sandwich was juicy with a peppery seasoning. The breading was a very light coat that stuck nicely to the chicken — I hate it when it falls off. It was closer to a Chick-Fil-A sandwich than the over-the-top gourmet chicken sandwich everyone’s raving about. Don’t get me wrong, the sandwich was good, but I wished there was more crunch to the breading.

Pro tip: Ask for extra pickles on the side; they are great! Slightly acidic and very crunchy.

Show-stopping fries

As much as it pains me to say this, the fries were a 10/10: perfection. They were crispy but not overcooked. They were salty, but not overly salted. Dip them in the “Bossy Sauce,” and you’re in for a treat. It was the perfect salty, chipotle, crunchy, creamy mixture. Your tastebuds will be very happy.

So, what’s my final answer?
I always tell it like it is with my reviews. If you choose to support Jim, the food here deserves a try. I wouldn’t go out of my way and make a pilgrimage here, but you definitely won’t be disappointed to stop and grab a fry if you are in the area. Overall, 7/10.
